simile: a figure of speech in which things different in kind or quality are compared by the use of the word like or as (Her eyes are like stars.)
metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase meaning one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a similarity between them (The clouds are big balls of cotton.)
synonym: a word having the same or almost the same meaning as another word in the same language (friend and pal)
antonym: a word of opposite meaning (hot and cold)
homophone: one of two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning, origin, or spelling (to and too and two)
personification: the representation of a thing or idea as a person or by the human form (The branches grabbed my hair.)
alliteration: the repetition of a sound at the beginning of two or more neighboring words (BillyBob bought big bananas.)
noun: a word that is the name of something- as a person, animal, place, thing (boy, dog, school, rock)
pronoun: a word that is used as a substitute for a noun (him, her, it)
adjective: a word that modifies a noun by describing a quality of the thing named (The pretty picture was hanging on the wall)
adverb: a word used to modify a verb, an adjective, another adverb (The boy ran quickly through the field)
action verb: a word that shows action or movement (run, jump)
